4th Grade Students Awarded Grant from Tri-County GATE Council
Eight of our very own fourth grade students have been awarded a grant totaling $200 from the Tri-County GATE Council to create their own P.E. program! Students from Ms. Tomich's class Rachel G., Katie G., Alexandra K., Devlin M., Liam O., Andrew V., David W. and Adrian Z. formed a team to strategize a plan and then wrote individual grant proposals requesting funds to support their efforts. Tri-County GATE Council awards grants each year to assist students in pursuing areas of interest. Individual grants were offered for $75, but because these students worked as a team, together they received a substantially larger amount. To file their applications, each student was required to state a purpose, write a description that included activities and methods and who and what would be involved, develop a proposed budget, create a method of evaluation and determine the dissemination of their program. The main goal of the proposed program is to improve overall health and fitness levels of all the students in their class, which in turn will make learning academics more successful.
The students are excited about being rewarded this recognition. They are currently working on how to best spend this funding and are involving their entire class in creating this program. They have each learned a lot from the experience - including the fact that $200 does not go far. If any families or sport's teams are clearing out old equipment, we would be happy to receive donations. The long range goal is to spread this program, based on its success, to more fourth grade classes.
